Fellow Kenyans,
I’ve been in Kenya a couple of months now. I’ve witnessed many areas in which our young nation has made considerable progress. But I’ve also observed areas in which there has been a steady decline. One such area is education. For some unknown reason, the public school system in Kenya has collapsed. In Nairobi, the public primary schools have become nothing short of dump grounds for children whose parents can’t afford the high-cost private schools that have sprung up all over the city. Matter of fact, it’s easy to see that the owners of these private schools have come together and formed a powerful cartel that will only continue to sink these public schools further.
The Public Universities are no better, but I won’t dwell on that. What I want to discuss with you is how you can help some of the kids in disadvantaged rural schools. I have written a comprehensive guide to two crucial set books—Ngugi’s, The River Between and Henrik Ibsen’s, An Enemy of the People. The first book is a novel, the second is a play. What’s crucial to note is that if a student fails the set books, they can’t pass their English. Needless to say failing English dramatically diminishes future career options.
What I want each of you to do is buy these two crucial guidebooks for students in your area. For example, Dr. Paul Nyandoto or my good friend Mr. Jairus K’Onyiego may want to buy these books for the form four students in your “home” school. Here is how to place the orders:
- Identify the school you wish to have the delivery made.
- Send money corresponding to the number of candidates in that school
- Let the headmaster/mistress/principal of that school know that a delivery will be made by Sahel Books Inc., to the School
- Write a note to those candidates, encouraging them to study hard and telling them about your experiences out of Kenya
To my friends all over the world, this is a way we can ensure that students in our schools do well and are equipped with the knowledge to do well in English.
Before I pen off, I encourage those who are gifted in other subjects—especially those who’ve taught them for years—to write guidebooks and submit the manuscripts to us. We will publish them and make them available to students around the nation.
Note: If you can send the money to your candidate directly so they place an order on their own, just let them know that the easiest way is to send it to us through M-pesa Services. That number is: 0715.596.106. After the payment, the student needs to send us information on the name to use and address to deliver the book/s.
I will write to some of you individually so that we can make this program explosive in our schools and help the students pass their exams.
Sincerely,
Sam O. Okello Jr.
